official description

Vittorio De Sica's Academy Award®-winning neorealist classic employs a heart-tugging story to capture, with documentary immediacy, the poverty and desperation of postwar Italy. An unemployed labourer (Lamberto Maggiorani) is thrown into despair and desperation when his precious bicycle, which obtained him a much-coveted position posting bills, is stolen on his first day on the job. As he and his ten-year-old son search throughout Rome, the film becomes an odyssey in which the two encounter the best and worst of humanity, struggling to survive amidst the city's postwar confusion. "Ladri di biciclette is one of the first examples of pure cinema: no more actors, no more story, no more sets, which is to say that in the perfect aesthetic illusion of reality there is no more cinema" (André Bazin).
