A box-office disappointment on its initial release, Ridley Scott’s neo-noir city symphony—envisioning a dystopian 2019 Los Angeles as a cacophony of decaying neons and perpetual acid rain—has become a tremendously influential text of postmodern speculation. When four android “replicants” designed to perform menial labour for their human masters go rogue and seek to meet their maker (literally), police-sanctioned “blade runner” Deckard (Harrison Ford) is assigned to terminate them. When he inadvertently falls in love with the “more human than human” Rachel (Sean Young), he is forced to reexamine the humanity he believes to be his birthright. Evoking both the optimistic “technotopia” of Fritz Lang’s Metropolis and a despairing view of a schizophrenically retrofitted future, Blade Runner’s vision of the world to come still feels eerily prescient today.
