ARCHIVAL PRINT!

Bursting with bold, intoxicating comic-book colours, Nicholas Ray's "baroque western" follows the title hero (Sterling Hayden), a former gunslinger trying to put his bloody past behind him, as he reunites with his ex-lover Vienna (Joan Crawford), a tough-minded entrepreneur who is no slouch with a pistol herself. When a bank robbery brings the simmering tension between Vienna and the resentful townsfolk—particularly the jealous and deranged Emma Small (Mercedes McCambridge)—to a boil, the stage is set for all-out war. With two of the strongest female characters in film history and a brilliant, amusing reversal of the western's typical gender roles, Johnny Guitar is both poignant and parodic, a surprisingly tender and psychologically nuanced romance and a precursor to the camp sensibility and Pop Art of the sixties.
