NEW PRINT!

A radiant love letter to la vie bohème, François Truffaut's third film brought the Nouvelle Vague to worldwide attention and established Truffaut as one of the most influential filmmakers of the era. Adapting the autobiographical novel by Henri-Pierre Roché, Truffaut nimbly chronicles the years-long friendship between Jules (Oskar Werner), an Austrian etymologist, Jim (Henri Serre), a Parisian writer, and the enchanting, narcissistic and mercurial Catherine (Jeanne Moreau), the woman they both love, whose passion and vivacity both enriches their friendship and drives them towards tragedy. Tracing this ménage a trois from the belle époque through World War I and its aftermath with a fantastic panoply of film techniques, Truffaut, cinematographer Raoul Coutard and composer Georges Delerue create a dizzying carousel of pure cinema, undercut by the wistful melancholy of times and loves long past. A direct inspiration for the incipient New Hollywood and a sublime invigoration of film language, Jules et Jim "is one of the moments when the history of film suddenly glows" (Stanley Kauffmann).
