Agnès Varda's celebrated debut feature is a film of enduring depth and fascination, unfolding nearly in real time yet with the structure of a fairy tale. A beautiful young pop singer, anxiously awaiting the results of a cancer test, reassesses her life and comes to realize how she has been forced into the role of a “spoiled child” by the men in her life. Sprinkled with references to the war in Algeria and cameos by colleagues such as Jean-Luc Godard, Anna Karina and composer Michel Legrand, Cléo de 5 à 7 is one of the most complex and original films of the French New Wave.
